What's in a Knee Sleeve?

Perhaps you have already seen some athletes sporting flashy bands on their knees. I, for one, once thought that those knee bands were to protect their knees from getting bruised and scratched if they stumbled and fell. Silly me, I know. I then came to know that those bands were actually knee sleeves. They do protect the knees, alright, but not just from bruises. They also protect the knees from future damage from the constant wear and tear and risks of injury. This type of protective gear is an essential especially when the knees are put under pressure regularly. The most common athletes who require this protection are those who are in weight lifting, power lifting, and strength training.

Because knee sleeves provide compression, it reduces pain and promotes blood flow naturally, even without that aid of medications. It provides valuable support to the knees, but the sleeves do not impede its natural joint movements or hinders the athlete from moving around comfortably.

Furthermore, knee sleeves support the positioning of your patella during work out or training. 

In a nutshell, here are the benefits of knee sleeves:

The seasoned athletes benefit more from these gears than the novice ones. The reason behind this is that as you progressively run longer and lift heavier, the more pressure is put on your knees.

However, even if you’re not an athlete, but plays basketball or likes to run so much, you would also need a pair in the long run (no pun intended).  These knee sleeves also act as a shock absorber when you land on your toes after that slam dunk. It also helps stabilize your legs when you suddenly change directions. For runners, it helps alleviate the pain from a long run.

Bear in mind, though, that no knee sleeves are created equal. There are a lot of sleeves on the market and not all of them can provide the compression that they promised.
